Over 2017/8 MindTech and the James Lind Alliance identified the Top 10 questions for digital technology in mental healthcare. These were filtered down from an initial 1,350 questions, submitted by people with live experience and health professionals. It is their intention that these will guide the funders of research to ensure that future research is focused on answering these questions and that the potential of digital technology for mental health can be fully realised.

The Academy and Onlinevents are so inspired by these questions and the reasoning behind them that we have decided to use them as the focus for a series of structured conversations hosted by The Academy and Onlinevents on the future of digital mental health care. This will include both online therapy and digital impact on face-to-face therapy.

Each conversation will centre around a series of structured questions related to the theme of the DigitalmHealth Conversation.

  1. What do we mean by "effective"?
  2. How might we measure "effective"?
  3. Do we have the evidence for online therapy?

Kate Dunn

I am a psychotherapeutic counsellor, supervisor, and consultant/trainer currently working in private practice both online and face-to-face. Whilst working as a counsellor in a university setting, I established an online service and subsequently carried out research into the Online Therapeutic Relationship, supported by Seed Corn Funding from BACP. I have shared ideas resulting from this research in journal articles (including Therapy Today, Counselling and Psychotherapy Research Journal, and TILT magazine) and in the book: "Psychotherapy 2.0: Where Psychotherapy and Technology Meet", Edited by P Weitz, Karnac Books 2014.

I trained in Integrative Humanistic Counselling and have been seeing clients since 2012. My training focused mainly on Person-Centred, Transactional Analysis, and Gestalt therapy. I now work exclusively online, and am based between Portugal and the UK. My previous background was in community development and family support, so I have broad experience of engaging so called 'hard to reach' groups. I am now specialising in couples/relationship counselling which I love.

I am a Dr Julian and Anxiety Uk approved therapist, and completed the General Certificate in Online Counselling and Psychotherapy in January of this year.

I'm a Human Being, Mum, Author, Doctoral (PhD) Clinical Researcher, and Child/Adult Psychotherapist specialising in virtual and corporeal trauma using Integrative creative methods including gaming and biofeedback. I am a gamer, blogger, vlogger, and podcaster. I'm the Director for Privacy4 (An industry information Standard for Therapists), a cyber specialist, and proposed a new theory as to why we engage in cyber space as we do. I have published in peer reviewed journals as a leading researcher in the U.K. around the topic of cybertrauma which included a new academic definition for cyberbullying and cybertrauma/online harms. I write for some of the largest U.K. e-safety companies, including a national newsletter #DITTO that goes directly into schools. I present at National and International conferences (which has included CCMH/IATE, NSPCC, Marie Collins, and Onlinevents), and have presented at ACTO (The leading online counselling organisation in U.K.), ACTIO, Confer, and other leading Psychotherapy Organisations around this large topic. I have been on Therapist Uncensored, Shrink Rap Radio, and Trauma Therapist podcasts in the U.S. I am a UKCP MSc dual Child & Adult Psychotherapist. I'm a mum to two adult boys, run a trauma practice, and have a private practice too. I am currently writing a second book. I have a great self-care routine and use Functional medicine principles and nutrigenomics to 'biohack' to ensure I am performing optimally for myself and my clients.

I'm a second-generation helping professional, and trained and qualified counsellor, psychotherapist, educator, and coach from Australia. I have worked in the therapy industry for 17 years, in private practice for 13 years, and in the online space for over 10 years of that.

I have worked in multiple roles within online therapy education over the past five years. Initially, I worked for Open Colleges in teaching trainee counsellors on the Diploma of Counselling courses. More recently, I have been educating future counsellors as an Academic Educator at the Australian College of Applied Psychology, across the whole gamut of their counselling and psychotherapy courses, in their online and blended delivery teaching unit.

Over three years ago, I commenced training counsellors, psychotherapists, social workers, and psychologists in Australia in online therapy and telehealth service delivery. Last year, due to this demand, my company Australian Online Therapy Training (AOTT), was born. I'm currently busy completing my forthcoming text; Online therapy: Processes, tasks, integration, and energetic holding that I'm looking forward to sharing with everyone when it's released.

About Philippa Weitz

I am interested in the success of the online therapeutic relationship, security, confidentiality, & jurisdiction as well as the use of virtual reality and artificial intelligence in therapeutic settings.

Most of all, I want to inspire therapists to simply go beyond turning on their webcams and thinking that is online therapy. There is such an exciting world out there for the online therapist ..... as big as the capacity of our mind to explore beyond what we are comfortable with.

So, what are my formal roles?
