Friday 17th July is the last day of International Supervision Week. In this hour we will review why we at Centre for Supervision and Team Development and onlinevents combined to make it a world wide event, what we have done and plans for it to be repeated next year.

Joan and Robin spend time reflecting with the online group about the place of work in our society and how supervision can help us to experience work as love in action.

This is a 4 week project with a live group supervision event each week facilitated by Robin Shohet.

A spiritual teacher (Byron Katie) said, “I trust people 100% to do what they do.” If you think about it there can be no betrayal in such a world view.

The topic I would like to focus on in this talk is the breaking of psychological contracts. This is a contract that is not explicit but a deal that has been made in the eyes of one party, which the other may not have known about. For example, ” I take a short lunch break so I am entitled to leave early. You have no right to challenge my integrity.” Or, ” I rescued you from your family. I am entitled to an affair.”

Lurking behind these psychological contracts are core beliefs which we are often unconscious of. What I am suggesting is, that we can use the universal feelings of betrayal to access some of our deepest core beliefs, which do not serve us.

In this discussion we would like to start an inquiry which looks at how different perspectives can lead to different ethical stances and how unconscious beliefs impact on ethical positions; for example the belief that punishment and naming and shaming will make human beings more ‘ethical’ and that we are all in agreement as to what is ’ethical’.

The day consisted of three 90 minute slots where Joan & Robin taught the model and engage in interactive dialogue with the audience. The workshop included exercises Powerpoint explanation of the 7 Eyed Model of Supervision and the personal experiences of the audience and Joan & Robin.

Part of my practice is to try and not attach to thoughts, believe my stories, and come to just look at and accept what is. When we sit with clients, they often have a great attachment to their stories, and there comes a time to help them move beyond them. First as therapists, mentors, coaches whatever, we have to do that ourselves and the supervisor can help us move beyond our own stories and in this way help the client move beyond theirs.

But of course the supervisor has to move beyond his or her story……

In this fourth event with onlinevents Robin talks about the importance of the relationship in Supervision and in Therapy and the role that trust plays. Robin talks about the impact of differing modalities, insurance and betrayal in helping relationships.

Following the two interviews that Robin has participated in with onlinevents “Fear and Love in Supervision” and “Safe Uncertainty in Supervision”, Robin offered a supervision session in front of a live audience.

In this interview Robin talked about the idea of safe uncertainty and modelled his thinking in the way he facilitated the chatroom.

The relationship is very much at the core of Robin’s work as he focuses on what gets in the way of forming and maintaining therapeutic relationships that are helpful both as a therapist and as a counselling supervisor. In this interview we enjoyed experiencing Robin’s passion for open, dynamic and freeing relationships!
